Scary Dad Stuff

First of all, hello. I know, I know, multiple posts on consecutive days… Yet alone consecutive MONTHS?!? Yes, I’m back. After having work hold me late the past two days (two thirteen hour days to be exact) I get today off! This is epic. I get some much needed daddy time in with the offspring. I love spending time with them, but I rarely get days off during the week (during the school year) so my daughter was surprised to see me this morning. The little guy still doesn’t know what’s up, he’s only a month old. So, I’m cooking bacon …mmm bacon… And I hear lily coughing… She’s eating grapes. Then she stops coughing… With a grape stuck. I FREAK out, rip her out of the seat, and can see said throat blockage in the VERY back of her mouth. Adrenaline starts pounding and I stick my pinkie in to go for it. Luckily one finger swipe and it’s out! I cut up the rest of the grapes and then have my own mini breakdown. I never want to experience THAT again.

The rest of the morning is filled with swinging in the yard, Ali ding down things, and fresh beat band on Nick Jr. while snacking on a banana. After we went to the post office to get some mail, we were walking around in the yard. Now, first you must understand I am DEATHLY afraid of snakes. DEATHLY afraid. So, we decide to go for a walk. We have several tree’s between our house and the road, and you have to walk through them for the shortest route. As we start through the tree’s I hear a hiss… I look down and to my HORROR, is a 12 foot monster boa constrictor/king cobra hybrid. Okay, so in reality it was a foot long common grass snake… But seriously, remember the deathly afraid part, I freaked! I snatched my daughter up, ran for the garage, found the BIGGEST snake decapitating device I could find. Ran steak gut back, took one swing, and just like my Canadian friend in a recent game of D&D let out a mighty roar as the blade swung down upon the small foe… And embedded it deeply in a root inches from it’s target… Embedded. The snake slithers(shivers at the thought) off and into the tree’s…. I can’t get the decapitating device out of the root. Now there is a FREAKING GIANT SNAKE LIVING IN OUR YARD.

What I went to the garage for:

What I actually got:

As you can see, I’ve had a scary “daddy” morning.

Curse You Old Conquest Posts about WoW…

For the love of all things holy I need to get out of my blogs and stop reading through past posts. First off, I’ve quit world of warCRACK several times over the past year. I’ve moved onto other games of the less massively multiplayer type. Minecraft for one. I’ve debated giving it another try, but then think, what’s the point, Star Wars: The Old Republic comes out in just a few months, and I WILL be playing that game for a long time. I LOVE Star Wars, and I LOVE MMO’s. I played Star Wars Galaxies for several years, so lets face it, even if SWTOR (Star Wars The Old Republic) sucks…. I’ll play for at least a good year or ten. I’ve had the collectors edition preordered since it went up online at 5am or whatever ungodly hour it went on sale that morning in July. Then, I think to myself… It’s WORLD OF WARCRAFT. You’ve spent YEARS of your gaming career, PLAYING THIS GAME. You have made REAL LIFE FRIENDS in THIS game. Not just “gamer friends,” but REAL LIFE FLESH AND BLOOD friends. Seriously. People that I would drive hours to visit, and have. Friends that have driven FIFTEEN HUNDRED mines to visit their “gamer friends” in Kansas.

20111006-175901.jpg

Friends that have gone out of their way from STL to come to nowheresville for the SOLE purpose of goofing off and giving up their labor day weekend to meet people that have only existed to them in an online community, most notably friendships started IN WoW. I have several friends that still play wow, still talk to me about the game, and every time they do, I get an itch in the back of my skull that tells me I NEED to come back in game for a little bit… Just one puff man, you won’t get hooked… I swear.

20111006-180240.jpg

Okay, it’s pretty obvious I have no clue about drugs… seriously, do you even smoke crack? or is crack one of the “stick a needle in your arm crazy drugs?” I don’t know… wait, I’ve watched some Breaking Bad… is Meth a sort of crack? I know they stick that in their pipe and smoke it… anyway, I digress, back at the “Why I think I’m getting sucked back into WoW” post I started here a bit ago…

Yeah, so back to WoW. Looking back through all of my posts here at World of Sy, It got me interested in the things I use to write for 4theHorde. (Which may have a goodbye post in the works, that’s still being discussed by the others, I may be shot for disclosing that, so if I disappear for no reason again, THAT HAS TO be why…) I started looking through the arcives over there… not a good idea. All of that beautiful wow imagery, all of the nostalgia building, the longing for a time when all of my real life friends, and gamer friends heralded the call of war chief Thrall, or that Varian Wren guy… and here I am, sitting at a desk, writing a ridiculous post about how I’m getting sucked back in… like this guy.

20111006-181200.jpg

Yeah, I know, a Star Wars guy referencing Star Trek. I’m a nerds nerd. Kirk didn’t know what he was talking about, but that aside, I’m a fan of the Trek as well. (CRAP, talk about getting derailed AGAIN, back to wow) I have no interest in end game, I am just longing for that leveling experience, I mean heck, I have ALL of the leveling gear, a few months until SWTOR, and an account paid up through November, what’s stopping me from playing the most popular MMO of ALL TIME. Well, besides two WONDERFUL kids during the daytime hours and an awesome wife who assumes I really do need SOME sleep at night… okay, so maybe I have many many reasons not to play in that two to three hour timeslot maybe once or twice a week… but still. I think I’m getting back into the wow mindset. I may have to pop in this evening after the kids are in bed. I AM off work tomorrow… maybe just one puff won’t hurt.

So Much for Blogging?

I’ve made several attempts to jump back into this crazy “blogging” (I’m still not sure it will catch on). I guess, here I go again. I’ve had this site, World of Sylus for quite a while now, but I’ve done absolutely NOTHING with it. Well, lets try to fix that.

If any of you know me, and lets face it, if for some reason I’m still in your feed reader, you probably know me, either personally, or you are a fellow shenanigan-ite, then you know I’ve been a fickle blogger. I’ll go hot and heavy for a while (that’s what she said) then I’ll disappear for a few months. (Does March to October qualify as a few months?) Well, here I go. I’ll see how long this one lasts. I’ve got so much to share. I mean, seriously, alot has happened in the last… March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October… Yup, 8 months. I’ve had a son (Jack Andrew, he’s awesome), I’ve started running, got hurt, quit running, Sarah was REALLY pregnant for a while there, she started running which motivated ME to start running again. We had a gamer meetup, aka Shenanicon over labor day weekend, Fikkle and Kev drove down from Canadia-Land, Jaarka and Rose from STL, Pie from KC, and of course the locals, S4M, Timah, and Duke (Respective significant others were there as well). It was a blast, I’m really looking forward to next year at Shenanicon 2012 when Sliggy makes the RL appearance, Rozzy MIGHT be coming in from NY. It could be HUGE.

I’ve played and quit playing several video games, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars Galaxies (again), World of Warcraft (for the zillionth time), Oblivion, Fallout 3… this list could go on for a while, so I’ll just stop at those. I’ve started a very fun game that has stuck with me for a few months, thank you Sam for introducing me to Minecraft. It’s addictive, simple, and somehow VERY enjoyable. (More on my Minecraft habit in posts to come). Star Wars has released ANOTHER version of the beloved classics…. Some changes = good, others = teh suck. (Also more on this to come in future posts. Oh yeah, and on that whole having a baby thing, with a toddler at home thing, killed my actual game time. If I play video games, it’s for an hour or two maybe one night a week… maybe.

Now, if I’m going to cram in some blogging, it’s going to be done elsewhere… away from the house, so I have my house time for my kids and wife, and I can waste more of my… (how can I say this without getting in trouble from teh employers if they figure out who I be) …not at home time? Yes, not at home time. Anyway, If you are still interested in hearing about what’s up with Sylus aka #OldManSy, let me know. Trend it on twitter, say Hi, I’m also there, @Sylus. It’s crazy, my nickname earned a nickname (OldManSy). Anyway, I guess I have some stuff to do… something about kids coming back into the room when the bell rings in like… 4 minutes.

Until Next Time,
OldManSy

The Beginning of theEnd

I’ve contemplated quiting World of Warcraft several times over my wow gaming career, almost six years…. wait, six years this month… This however is probably the time. My “nerdness” has always been Star Wars. My MMO carreer began in a galaxy far far away with Star Wars Galaxies. World of Warcraft has been amazing. I’ve put alot into my wow experience, and in return have taken away alot as well. Some of the friendships I know will last past world of warcraft. My internet persona “Sylus” came from one of my most loved world of warcraft characters. This will last past my wow days. My blogging began because of warcraft. I wrote for 4theHorde for a good three year stretch before we let it fizzle out. hat was one of my true regrets. We let it fizzle out rather than go out on top. Oh well, now I plan on taking world of Sylus to the next step and use it as my personal blog to talk about star wars, my life, my dreams, my desires… okay, maybe not THAT personal, but yeah, anything I want. Blogging is back for the Sy. Now to sit back, enjoy my few months vacation before Star Wars the Old Republic launches, and enjoy life.

Until then,
Uncle Sy

If They Could See Me Now

It’s been right at five months. Five months that I could have been writing again. Alot has happened in that time. ALOT.  Seriously, five months is more than half my daughters life! Speaking of my daughter, she’s almost walking, says da-da ALL the time, and even if she loves her sleep, too bad it’s in two hour intervals. Over that five month period, I graduated from PSU with my elementary education degree, sweet, have been running the town pool, pretty sweet, and I accepted a contract to teach kindergarten and coach high school baseball at a school about 20 minutes from me. In a job market the way it is around here for teachers, I was ecstatic to get ANY teaching job, yet alone a teaching job that is one of my first choices for grade level, AND comes with a high school baseball coaching gig as well, STINKIN SWEET!!!

Now, I’ll be the first to admit I played a little bit of world of warcraft in my day, correction, there for a few years I played ALOT of world of warcraft. I am even responsible for a few of my good friends STILL playing world of warcraft. That has changed over the past few months as well, specifically, over the course of this summer. I started the summer playing  when friends could play. Then, slowly, over about a month period I played less and less. I had even decided to take a break. I knew I would have little time to play anyway, with working at the pool all the time, swimming lessons, pool parties, spending time with the wife, kiddo, and a new job starting in the fall I needed to prepare for. During the first two weeks of that break I had a bit more free time then I thought I would end up with. I used that time to watch movies with the wife, to play in the yard with the kiddo, to read a book, basically be a normal husband and father, not a game addicted internet nerd. Now, let me take a minute and say I’m not bashing on the gaming internet nerds, seriously, that’s my roots. I love the internet, MMO’s, RPG’s, chat rooms, forums, blogs, and the like. I’ve just come to a point in my life where priorities have shifted and moved closer to the public “norm.”

I wish I could say my gaming habits have shifted due to some dramatic game altering conspiracy by Blizzard to take over the world, but in actuality I’m quitting because my family is my number one priority now. It’s hard to be a dad with a nine month old kiddo and being tied into a raid group about to take down sarth 3-D. It’s just not in the cards.

Now, to those people that have meant so much to me over the past five years plus in my MMO history, you guys are awesome. You were friends when I needed them, allies when the were called for, and even enemies when I needed some pvp. You were what held me in wow for so long. You were why I stuck around for so long. Shenanigans will continue openly in email, but my wow career, if not my MMO career, is coming to a close. I am looking forward to Star Wars The Old Republic, but we’ll see if I decide to sink my teeth into that gem of a game or not. Time will tell. Until then, call me a Family Guy.

Real Life Craziness!

Yeah, it’s been a bit, I hear ya though. You want some Sylus, I guess I have to deliver. First, lets catch everyone up to speed. My daughter is three and a half months old(I’m not into dad-speak so I couldn’t tell you how many weeks). I’ve officially started my student teaching semester and am LOVING it. First graders are like trade chat in wow, but with less vulgarity and idiocy(almost like barrens chat, but a bit less sophisticated Chuck Norris jokes).

Now, I know 4theHorde has been pretty bare as well. Fikkle quit playing the wow, something about responsibility and such! Pie is running with another raiding guild on another server, which is great for him, I’m truly happy you are having fun with the game again there pie! Nim, well, Nim is Nim. He’s got his hand in many different projects, including a star wars table top game with yours truly. The Dude known as Slig, aka Gamedame, has been dominating fallout three(at least that’s what her rapotor/twitter account is always telling me!) So as you can see, not alot of 4theHorde worthy of posting atm… Well, I guess I did level tailoring up to get two more mounts throwing the Gozz total mount count to 85…. but I told you here, so I guess I’m off the hook for not posting it on 4theHorde!

As for me, I’ve had the pleasure of doing another recruit a friend with good ol’ Spiffie. See, Spiffie has been a real life friend of mine for years now. I got him hooked on the wow, and now he’s Jones’in for it as much as the rest of us. Thing is, He ended up leveling his hunter to 80 without any of my guidance. ( apparently he shuns the blog? I don’t know) Either way I felt that I wanted to do some real playing with him. So now we are about a week into our recruit a friend 90 days, and I have a 33 lock, he has a 32 warrior. I know I know, I’m ahead of him, I’m a jerk friend. whatever! We plan on getting these guys to 60, then starting over again. I’ll level a warrior, he’ll level a druid or something else, pally maybe. Our goal is to have 4 60 toons each out of this by the end of the 90 days. From there we’ll work on getting our favorites to 80. In the mean time I’ve been shuffling toons, deleting toons, and consolidating my wealth on Dawnbringer. I now have two guild banks, with a few pages each, and am working on leveling my priest during my little play time that Spiffie isn’t on as well. It’s all good, and he’ll be 80 sometime in the next ten years.

Well, I guess everyone that comes here kind of expects stupid pics and wierd stuffs, so let me leave you with a few random shots from the ol’ screenshot folder.

Call me Orc-Laddin!

Queen Lady Warrior at your service.

My lady warrior is gonna look sick at 80!

“Hey guy, want to go get a drink after your shift?”
“I’m not a dude… but sure.”

Catch you crazies around.
